I am a co-worker of Ms. Doakes. She has also been my trainer/preceptor. I have never met a more dedicated nurse to the profession. She never says no, and she puts the needs of others above her own daily. An example of her “doing more”: We were walking to a Nurse Week BBQ for lunch, and on our way, we came across an older gentleman who seemed lost. We stopped to ask him if he needed help. He told us he was looking for the patient advocate's office. Ms. Doakes immediately looked at the map, but there was no luck to be found there. She called a resource she knew to ask if there was a department available for patient advocacy, but she was told that the position had not been filled. She then contacted her supervisor to look for further assistance, and in the process, we walked and actively listened to the man’s concerns regarding his wife’s care.

After working through the challenges of identifying his needs, we determined that the best place to help him was internal medicine with a squadron-level patient advocate. We then walked the man to internal medicine, asked for the patient advocate, and she sat with the man while he spoke to the advocate, and provided an overview of his concerns to the advocate, as he was distressed over his frustration with the care received. The advocate listened to the man and Ms. Doakes, then advised that we could leave, and she would help him from there. Ms. Doakes showed two “Customer Service Best Practices”. She showed “Be Courteous” and “Exemplify Excellence” with the care she provided to this man on her lunch break. This is just one example of how Ms. Doakes does more daily.
