Alana comes to work each day with an unwavering focus on her patients and the care they deserve.

She consistently brings clinical excellence, thoughtful attention, and deep compassion to every interaction. Her patients are not simply tasks to complete or rooms to visit; they are people she advocates for, listens to, and cares for with intention. Alana ensures her patients feel safe, supported, and truly seen, and she is a strong and thoughtful advocate for their treatment plans and overall well-being.

Recently, I learned that the compassion she shows within the hospital extends far beyond our walls.

Over the past several months, Alana has been quietly caring for her neighbors during an incredibly difficult time in their lives. One of her neighbors had entered hospice care at home. On the first night hospice services were set up, the patient’s husband was overwhelmed and unsure how to care for his wife.

In that moment, before even beginning her own evening shift, Alana stepped in to help. She made sure the patient was comfortable, helped guide the husband through what to do, and offered the calm presence they desperately needed. After working her full shift, Alana returned again around midnight to check on them and make sure they were safe for the night.

In the days that followed, she continued to stop by every four hours to help provide care, comfort, and support during the patient’s final days. When the patient passed away in January, Alana remained a steady presence for the family during their grief.

Not long after his wife’s passing, the husband himself became very ill and was diagnosed with a terminal illness. With little support around them, Alana again stepped in. She continued to provide care, advocacy, and compassion for her neighbor as he faced the end of his life.

His greatest wish was simply to be reunited with his wife, and Alana helped ensure that his final days were comfortable and dignified, advocating for the care he needed so he could have peace at the end of his life.

What is most remarkable is that you would never know any of this from the way Alana shows up to work each day. Despite carrying the emotional weight of supporting her neighbors through two profound losses, she continues to arrive at work fully present for her patients, offering warm, compassionate, and highly competent care to everyone she encounters.

Alana does not care for people simply because she is scheduled to work a shift or for recognition. She cares for people because it is who she is. Nursing is not just her profession; it is clearly part of her character. She embodies the art of nursing where clinical skill, compassion, and humanity meet.

Alana is a beautiful example of what nursing looks like when heart is at its center.

For the care she provides to her patients, her colleagues, and even the people in her own neighborhood, she is profoundly deserving of recognition through the DAISY Award.

Thank you, Alana, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
