Alannah Spain
My dad was admitted to St. John's ward, as his cancer had sadly returned. He had been there the year prior, but this year he had a new nurse (Alannah) in his final few days.
The care she showed my dad was astounding. He unfortunately couldn't speak so Alannah really took her time to explain everything involving his treatment as there were times he was quite worried.
One moment that has stayed with me was when my dad was having a time of panic; he put his hand out to her, and she stayed with him, holding his hand until he felt calm. She explained everything and put him at ease, to which my dad then wrote "OK buddy" on his board. " Buddy" was a name my dad kept only for close friends and family, so we know he was happy to be under her care.
I cannot thank Alannah enough for being his last new buddy. The compassion she showed him will stay with my family and me for life. I have no doubt that if my dad were here today, he would nominate her, so I will do so in his place.
