Albert showed exemplary compassion and care for a patient who was with us twice a week for several months. He also provided extraordinary care and compassion to her family.
This patient required frequent blood transfusions, close cardiac and fluid status monitoring. Socially, she was trying to maintain her quality of life to spend time with her sons and grandchildren. Her sons struggled to understand the complexity and urgency of her care. Albert made sure to call them throughout her treatments and to explain as changes were made and lab results were updated. He also provided the support they needed when questions came up regarding end of life care. His professionalism and gentle but humorous nature allowed both the patient and her family to adjust to her disease process in their own time.
Eventually, she did pass but I feel that Albert's supportive care and engagement went above and beyond. His care allowed them to have the quality time they needed together in the final stages of her treatment and life.
