Alejandra was the night shift labor nurse for one of my patients with an epidural. After several hours of comfortable labor, the patient began experiencing increased labor contraction pain. Alejandra independently evaluated the patient’s pain by measuring dermatomal sensory loss accurately. She conveyed that information to me, which allowed me to reach a determination that the current epidural catheter position was inadequate and would require replacement, particularly if a c-section was to become necessary.
