On Friday, my son was admitted to the 4th floor. He has a fear of being in the hospital and of anybody getting close to him due to past experiences being admitted. Alex was the nurse working when we went up to the floor from the ED. Right away he made my son feel more at ease. He made it not so scary. He explained everything to me so well.
Through the night, Alex was consistent with checking on my son and making sure we were doing ok. There was never a period of time where it went too long without Alex coming in. Each time he would insure my son that he was not going to hurt him or put anything else in his body.
We were blessed when the second night we got Alex again. Alex again made my son feel comfortable. He came in at a time he was having a bad nightmare. He waited to do the nasal swab he needed, asked my opinion on what I thought would be best for my son and took that into consideration. He really, truly came off as understanding and caring.
Alex didn’t want to just rush in and do the tests he needed, he wanted what was less traumatizing for my child. He made suggestions after that for future hospital visits on what might work for my son. He was compassionate and had empathy. He was an amazing nurse and there is just something about Alex that he radiates that my son (and I’m sure other kids) pick up on.
Alex radiates joy, safety, trustworthiness, kindness, and the ability to relate. He made us feel as comfortable as we could be in the situation and not at all intimidating for my son and me. I know nursing is a hard job and it can wear someone down, but I believe Alex was made for it and for caring for others. It’s not just the way he is an attentive nurse but just the person he is and radiates to everyone around. He is definitely someone we will remember!
