I am a 4th year OB/GYN Resident and I am writing this nomination for one of the strongest and most valuable team members, Alena. On L&D this week, Alena was caring for a very sick patient with multiple complications and very complex issues. This patient required acute care. The patient had multiple large operations during her admission. When the patient improved and was ready for discharge, Alena spent hours reviewing her discharge instructions and counseling the patient. She reviewed all the team's recommendations for outpatient follow-up and repeat imaging. Alena made the patient’s appointments. She verified the addresses, phone numbers, and where to go for each appointment (floor, office number etc). Alena went above and beyond for this patient to ensure a safe discharge. The patient was overwhelmed after having a very challenging admission and an unexpected hysterectomy after a c-section. She did not speak English well. She easily could have been lost trying to follow her complicated discharge instructions. I believe Alena positively affected this patient's care. She will have better outcomes overall because of her nurse! This is just one example of the wonderful work Alena does daily!
