Alex was the charge nurse for the ICU almost every Thursday that we were at clinical this semester. He was rarely without a smile in his interactions with the students and went above and beyond in his efforts to welcome them into the ICU and facilitate their learning experiences. In addition to his own responsibilities, he went out of his way to look for learning opportunities for students...taking them to the ER for a patient that was coming to the ICU, or to IR for a procedure, explaining various cardiac monitoring devices, allowing them to watch the process of receiving and recovering a fresh CABG patient and more. He intentionally spent time after codes debriefing with students to make sure they understood what happened during the code and even texted me after clinical the next day to make sure the students were ok. He modeled a team player spirit by being available to help not only us but all of the nurses and did it cheerfully.
