September 2019 Honoree
Alex Shum, RN
We were admitted with our five-week-old son for high fever. We were uneasy and very concerned while waiting for the results. Alex was our night nurse and he was calm, helpful, and informative. He helped to educate us on the illness and best practices to prevent and combat illnesses in the future. He helped with calming, cleaning, changing, even feeding and treated our son like his own. He explained how to read the monitors and explained in-depth the reason for each medication administered. When checking vitals, Alex asked when I last heard my son’s heartbeat, which was the day he was born. Alex handed me the stethoscope and allowed me to hear my son’s heart and lungs. He assured me our son was strong and healthy, which was what I needed. Through the chaos, Alex was truly a blessing and before leaving, we thanked him to which he replied, “It was my honor to care for your son.”
Thank you, Alex, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
