She did all she could to put him at ease and make him comfortable, especially for someone who couldn’t talk.
My husband spent approximately 4 days in the ICU this past week. I have to first remark on the nurses in general, who were very informative, very caring, and I felt very comfortable asking them questions; if they didn’t know, they got the answer for me. I do, however, have to comment on one in particular. Lexi was a Godsend to me and to my family. When my husband was brought in, he was basically asleep for 4 days; no one really knew what was going on with him at first. Needless to say, the tears did flow a few times, and Lexi was right there with me, putting her arm around me, talking to me, telling me that “we will get to the bottom of this issue”. I truly thought I was burying him this time. That feeling, combined with not knowing what was going on with him, is something I prefer never to feel again. If medication was due, she was there administering it. She also noticed a few times that he was in pain by his facial expressions. She did all she could to put him at ease and make him comfortable, especially for someone who couldn’t talk. She made sure he was clean and gave him dignity during the process. When the doctors did realize what the issue was, she explained to me that with each passing day, I would see an improvement, and sure enough, I did. As his hormone was being replaced, I could see him come back. The day before she had off, she personally came to me and told me who his nurse was going to be and that she would be back in on Saturday. Naturally, Friday was when he perked up a little, and Saturday, he was basically back to his sarcastic self. My husband was not on her services that day, but she made it a point to come in and say hi to him, and I was able to introduce her, tell him exactly what she did for him, and how I was treated in the process. She was very excited to see his eyes open for more than 5 seconds. They laughed together, and she told him how relieved she was to see him awake. Lexi understood how difficult a hospital stay is for loved ones and what we go through when we are sitting there hour after hour waiting for some signs of life. Never did she leave his room without asking me if I needed anything. I could leave at night knowing Lexi was with him, taking care of him, and that her handoff to the next nurse would be seamless. Last night (Monday) was his last day in the ICU. He was moved to the 3rd floor after his dinner. Although I’m thrilled his condition is more stable and they are expecting to release him in the next few days, God willing. Lansdale has found a diamond.
