I sat watching with tear-filled eyes as Alex put fresh, clean braids in her hair. I felt immense gratitude for a woman who cares for my daughter like I do.
Our 10-year-old daughter has spent many nights inpatient on 5B. Her diagnosis is complex and rare which makes her care unique. Alex has been a shining light for us and has created an incredible bond with our daughter. It is apparent how dedicated Alex is to her patients and her career. Whether we are assigned to Alex during her shift or not, Alex makes time to come see us and check in or leave a sweet note. Some of our daughter’s challenges leave her feeling defeated, and seeing Alex and getting wrapped in her warm hug instantly lifts her spirits.

One stay that leaves the biggest imprint on my heart is when our daughter had come back to 5B from a stay in the PICU and her hair was matted. Alex sat on her bed, washed it, and brushed through every piece of it. I sat watching with tear-filled eyes as Alex put fresh, clean braids in her hair. I felt immense gratitude for a woman who cares for my daughter like I do.

I couldn’t think of someone more deserving of a DAISY Award. Her care is top notch, she’s well educated in her patient’s needs, and her empathy for what her patients and their families are going through is felt when she walks in the room. CHKD is beyond lucky to have Alex as part of their nursing team. As a parent, I couldn’t express my gratitude to someone who makes our daughter feel as safe and loved on this journey as Alex does. We are beyond grateful!
