I immediately felt calmer and confident that my mom was in good hands.
The past few months have been a whirlwind for myself and my family, especially my mother who at 69 years old and 8 months after retiring from 25 years of nursing was diagnosed with Glioblastoma. She has been in and out of hospitals and medical offices since, and while we are grateful for the wonderful care she has received, Alexandra Ellis stands out to my whole family as an Extraordinary Nurse. After 36 hours in the emergency room waiting for a bed, my mom was moved to the Step-Down Unit late at night, and due to visitor restrictions, we were unable to go up with her. The next morning when we arrived to visit, my mom was being taken out of the room for a test, and we were immediately nervous. Alex took my brother and me to the side and introduced herself, explained what was going on and why, and shared her goals for the day with my mom. I immediately felt calmer and confident that she was in good hands. Alex worked with my mom for the next few days, going above and beyond to ensure she was comfortable and had everything she needed. Extra ice cream? Alex had a stash. Hot tea? Alex was bringing it before my mom could finish asking. She pulled me aside one day to let me know that she got a birthday card for my brother and hid it on my mom's bedside table so she could write him a note. My mom was fairly incontinent and voided just after Alex and her Nursing Assistant had cleaned the bed, and yet they were running to get a new purewick. They didn't complain or even show any sort of aggravation, and promptly cleaned her up and made sure she was comfortable. I am beyond grateful for Alex and everything she did for my mom.
