I have worked in the medical field for almost 40 years; the last 12 on P5 as a nurse practitioner. I work with wonderful nurses but recently one stood out.

One of our patients has been dealing with heart failure for years. She is young, less than 50 years old. This admission she has been here for over a month, having complications after heart surgery. She is a very nice woman and one of our nurses, Alex, has been extremely sweet to her. She spends her break times sitting with her if she is able and going out of her way to visit her.

Because the holidays are coming, Alex ordered her two small Christmas trees and brought them both to her for her to choose her favorite! Alex wanted her and her husband to open it and set it up! I saw it after she got it and her face lit up when talking about it. Something so small that reminds the patient of being “normal” at home with loved ones is priceless!
