Alex Meer demonstrates extraordinary compassion FOR and dedication TO her patients. I witnessed a specific example last week.
Alex's patient Mrs. L was suffering from end stage COPD, scheduled to go home on hospice the next day and very anxious. She asked Alex for a priest at 2:30 a.m. Alex paged off-shift administration and the on-call hospital chaplain but Mrs. L really wanted to see a priest specifically. Alex asked Mrs. L about her parish then took the initiative to look up and call the parish a few times until she spoke with Mrs. L's priest. The priest explained that every hospital has an affiliated on-call parish. Alex then looked up that information and contacted our affiliated parish (again a few calls before she spoke with somebody). They told Alex they would put Mrs. L on a list of patients to be seen. Unsatisfied, Alex called Mrs. L's priest again who then agreed to come see her. Around 3:30 a.m., Mrs. L's personal priest came to her room to comfort her. Alex really went above and beyond to make this happen. She showed great compassion, determination, creativity and resourcefulness to meet the needs of her patient.
