My uncle spent the last week of his life on the 6th floor of the Northwest Pavilion. It was clear that he was near the end. His nurse, Lex, compassionately explained what was happening, the hospice process, and continued throughout the day and evening to take care of us as well as my uncle.
She and her nursing student made all of us comfortable, made sure we had what we needed, and continued to care for our dying uncle in the kindest way possible.
When her shift ended, she embraced each of us with tears in her eyes, thanked us for being there for our uncle, and supported and encouraged us in our decision-making about whether to stay or go.
After we thought Lex was gone, she came running back into the room - she had forgotten to say goodbye to our uncle. She said she wouldn't have been able to live with herself if she hadn't come back to say goodbye to him. It was hard to say who in the room was more emotional.
It was so comforting and heartwarming to have our uncle's caregiver show such care for her patient. She is a true testament to what a nurse and caregiver should be - competent but also caring and loving.
