After the patient passed, Alexis created a peaceful environment in the patient’s room for the family to grieve for their mother.
Alexis cared for a patient in the Intensive Care Unit during the last hours of her life. Because of the care provided by Alexis, the patient departed this life peacefully and the family received keepsakes that will forever remind them of their mother. The family had a difficult time deciding the course of care their mother would take and were unsure about what to do. The family decided on comfort care for their mother after much discussion. However, while steps were being made to make their mother comfortable, one sibling got very upset and second-guessed the decision. Alexis immediately stopped everything and answered all of the family’s questions again. Alexis made sure that all members of the family were comfortable with the decision and that all their questions were answered before she proceeded to comfort care. After the patient passed, Alexis created a peaceful environment in the patient’s room for the family to grieve for their mother. She made sure that the rosaries were placed in the patient’s hands because the patient always kept her rosaries close at hand and wanted them with her when she passed. Alexis wanted to give the family something they could keep in remembrance of their mother, so she created footprints and handprints for all four of the children. Alexis made individual handprints and footprints for each family member and washed the patient’s hands and feet after each print was made. In addition to the handprints and footprints from their mother, Alexis also gave each family member an EKG printout of their mother’s heartbeat. The level of care that Alexis provided was above and beyond the call of duty. The family could not express how grateful they were for the wonderful nursing care Alexis provided to their mother and will remember that their mother left this world peacefully and without pain.
