She touched my mother's arm and held her hand and told her she was going to ensure she had a great day. Alexis was kind, understanding, and patient.
My typically healthy, vibrant, strong 72-year-old young mother was rushed by ambulance to Carle Hospital (BroMenn). After an emergent cardiac catheterization, ruling out pulmonary embolism and a few other life-threatening conditions she was diagnosed with multiple organ dysfunction syndrome from Covid-19. This treacherous disease attacked her pancreas, heart, liver, kidneys, lungs, and skin. Needless to say, I nearly lost my mother on more than one occasion.
It was hospital day number 6 when Nurse Alexis
joined my mother's patient care team. Alexis's home unit is typically CVICU but, she graciously floated to the cardiac step-down unit where my mother was a patient. Alexis arrived on Thursday morning with a smile in her eyes and a gentle voice that greeted my mother. Alexis knew immediately how ill my mother was, and I could tell in her voice she would advocate for my mother at all costs. Alexis was prepared for my mother's morning assessment with the exact pain & nausea medication she knew she needed without being asked. She touched my mother's arm and held her hand and told her she was going to ensure she had a great day. Alexis was kind, understanding, and patient. She listened to my mother's needs and I immediately knew she was in good hands. The trust I acquired in only the first five minutes of this first impression, immediately put my mind and body at ease. Not only was Alexis a critical-thinking nurse who tended to every serious medical need for my mother, but she was also soft, caring, and gentle. Alexis gave me the inner peace that I needed for this day and for the first time I was able to leave my mother's bedside to take an emotional and physical break, take a shower and change into fresh clothes.
With the chaos of this hospital admission, Alexis brought encouragement and hope during a very scary time for me and my family. Alexis deserves to be honored with the DAISY Award for the compassion in her heart, brilliance in her mind, and the kindness she bestowed on my very ill mother. Thank you, Alexis, for being the best nurse, the best advocate, and offering a gentle hand to my mother. I appreciated you more than you will ever know on day number 6, when you and your smile showed up in our room.
