I know my daughter is starting to feel better now, but the way my girl lights up when Lexie has been our nurse, even on our worst night when Lexie had to do a ton of treatments for us all night, shows me that she trusts her to take care of her.
We have been admitted to 5B for going on three weeks for fever and infection. This admission was seemingly far from Christmas, but now the holiday is upon us. We have gone through many phases during this admission: fear, anxiety, disbelief, hopefulness, joyfulness—so many feelings and experiences. Throughout our admission, we have had a standout nurse several times. Some days, some nights, weekdays, weekends. She is consistently kind and cheerful. She is also so hard-working and very thorough with her assessments. All of these qualities and actions help us to know she truly cares and lets us experience her unwavering compassion. My daughter loves it when Lexie greets her, “Hey boo!” Today, she declared her the “best nurse ever.” She colored her a picture—my daughter’s own idea, and the first picture she’s colored in weeks. I know she’s starting to feel better now, but the way my girl lights up when Lexie has been our nurse, even on our worst night when Lexie had to do a ton of treatments for us all night, shows me that she trusts her to take care of her. Lexie’s spirit and ability to anticipate needs and responses and organize her care have helped us to be so much more comfortable. Her positivity has, without a doubt, helped pull us through this admission.
