She was there every step of the way and always made sure to remind me, "You're doing such a great job, momma." She gave me back my confidence and strength during the most difficult time in my life, and that allowed me to stay positive and get through everything that was happening.
This nurse is not just amazing; she takes the time and dedication to understand our behavioral mental health patients. I watch countless patients come in during a crisis through the ED and see her work her magic. Have you ever watched a patient fresh off of an ingestion with plans to take their life open up and discuss the whys? I have. This nurse finds a way to build such a bond that these patients feel safe and share their struggles. She has stayed in a room for hours to make sure that the patient knows she isn't there to get the information needed and bolt. She rather sits down with them and builds a detailed coping plan to ensure that the patients’ needs are met. I have watched her recently deal with a patient who was hallucinating and sit on the floor while the patient stemmed off and ensured their safety. Her calm and warm manner allows any patient to feel safe. I am beyond proud to be working with such a stellar nurse.

I'm a CHOA employee at Support. Recently, my 8-year-old daughter had a series of seizures, and we were transferred to Scottish Rite from Kennestone. Prior to our transfer, my daughter was given Keppra to stop the seizures, and for the next few days while we were at CHOA, she was experiencing "Keppra Rage". My daughter is also autistic, but never in my life have I been bitten, punched, and screamed at by her like the CHOA staff and I were during that stay. I have never cried so hard in my life. I didn't know what to do. I thought I was doing nothing right as a parent, and I was very much heartbroken by the flood of emotions my child was experiencing and how difficult that must have been for her. This nurse was part of the BMH team helping us and was there to give me breaks and take over when I just didn't know what to do anymore. She was there every step of the way and always made sure to remind me, "You're doing such a great job, momma." She deserves this award so much, and I hope she gets shown the same love that she gives out!
