Alexis always makes it a point to learn something personal about her patients. Recently, she admitted the patient in M118. As she was preparing this patient for surgery, she learned that the patient was a hospice nurse who recently had to stop working. She needed to take time to care for her husband who was at home on hospice. The patient then went on to explain how her husband had been battling cancer and she was able to prolong his life by donating her kidney to him. The patient was very anxious to hurry and get surgery so she could get back home to her husband because his birthday was the next day. She was worried she wasn't going to have time to get him balloons or anything. The next day the patient was recovering well from her surgery. Alexis showed up to work with a balloon bouquet a teddy bear and some gum for the wife. The patient told Alexis she liked to chew gum to stay occupied. It helped her anxiety. Alexis also got a sweet, inspirational birthday card to send home with the patient and had everyone, even the doctor, sign it. The patient was over the moon, excited, and thankful that there are compassionate and personable nurses like Alexis. This is just one example of what an amazing person Alexis is, but she does things like this on a daily basis. She is very special.
