On a Friday, I took my nineteen-year-old daughter to the ER. She had very low blood pressure. Her pediatrician was not in that day and another doctor said to just take her to the ER. The nurse was with us checking on my daughter on and off from one to five in the afternoon. My daughter has many health issues at such a young age, PTSD, anxiety, depression, indigestion, chronic sinusitis, and severe allergies. She was taken for a test, and I explained to the nurse that my daughter's father passed away when she was seven years old. My daughter has struggled, and I explained to the nurse that the twelve-year anniversary of my husband's accident was the day before. My daughter had nightmares and a panic attack the day before the anniversary. My daughter is on all this medicine such as anti-depressants. She had lost weight and is so thin from all of this medicine. I knew this had nothing to do with the passing, but I told the nurse anyways, so she could see the whole picture. I was not sure if I would be merely listened to as a nervous mother. But no, she was so compassionate and understanding, a wonderful listener. God truly had her working at that time in the ER because we needed to be understood. She treated the whole person, not just the presenting symptom of low blood pressure. I've explained to my daughter how we are whole persons, and it is so hard to separate the physical from the emotional from the mental from the spiritual. I know my daughter's BP was fine in the ER, but we were treated with the utmost of respect, tests were run, blood drawn, IVs in place, the nurse grasped our situation. We discussed the Caring Place, and the nurse really understood grief. Thank you for your kindness, Ali, and UPMC. Thank you for not belittling our sadness.
