AC has worked tirelessly since the first day in her position to make sure that I feel supported in my role.
To know Alice Chaney is to love her. So who is Alice Chaney? To some she is a wife, mom, and nurse, but she is more than just that. You may hear her be called Alice Chaney, AC, and even Chaney. But never Alice. Along with her many names, a few characteristics describe her: honest, caring, trustworthy, determined, incredibly fair, supportive, organized, Christian, optimistic, gracious, considerate, servant leader and the list goes on.
In just eight short months as the Director of Adult Nursing Services, she has already made a significant impact in her areas throughout Wiser and adult hospitals. She encourages time off at times when she feels one of us needs it. She knows us well enough to gauge when we are having a stressful time. She can always sense when it has been a bad week, and she will schedule a lunch gathering off-campus on Friday so that we can enjoy an early start to the weekend.
AC understands the importance of our mental health as related to being a nurse manager. Most of us thought 2020 was the worst year.... until 2021 came in like a wrecking ball. A widespread winter storm brought snow and ice to our state, unlike anything we had seen in years. Nursing Services is largely responsible for taking all Adult area call-ins and arranging sleeping needs for the employees, especially during an event like this. AC was on deck with the rest of the nursing service staff, working countless hours organizing and arranging sleeping needs for employees on the campus grounds. She bought food, snacks, and drinks for every staff member in the office. It was days before most of us went home to our families, including her. We learned at this time who AC was not only as a boss but also as a person.
Alice Chaney has frequently prayed with each of us and regularly sends us inspirational quotes she finds. She scheduled the Chaplain to attend one of our manager meetings for Blessing of the Hands. It was a moment of reflection that allowed us to breathe.

I feel Alice Chaney is a good leader not because she does extraordinary things but because she does the ordinary basic things you expect of a leader. She is organized, on time, respectful of others, an engaged listener, and genuinely wants input from others.

I have truly seen the compassion she has for the mamas and babies not only at UMMC but in the state of Mississippi. She is very passionate about patient care. However, I truly believe she cares for me not only as one of her direct reports but also as a friend.

As a leader, she is always present and willing to think outside the box to find solutions to issues that may arise. She is an advocate for both her management team and the staff that serve in Wiser/NRT. I truly believe that this is her ordained time to lead. I am humbled and grateful to be a part of this team.
