Wanted to give kudos to Alice DiPietro who stepped in and was able to translate for a slightly confused and very agitated patient. She spoke his dialect. He had been 2 Code Greys today plus an RRT and was very reluctant to speak to anyone, take meds, or allow an IV line to be placed. She took the time to listen to the patient and communicate with the doctor. This situation was escalating and could easily have become an unnecessary restraint application.
What the patient wanted to do was to see his wife who was dying in a nursing home and had promised to be with her. He was willing to sign AMA and only wanted to be with his wife. The doctor initially had wanted to place a psych hold on the patient since no one could understand what he needed. Alice saved the day. The patient's BP was high, and he was aware of that but wanted to leave anyway. The patient would not comply with any other person but Alice. Alice was/is awesome!

Alice has shown exceptional professionalism, compassion, and effective nursing care throughout her nursing career while I've known her at Virtua. She has shown me a side to her that exemplifies a proactive, intelligent, patient medical professional. I had the fortune of having her assistance during my time caring for a patient with a complicated social dilemma and also had a language barrier.
A patient was admitted for a change in mental status and continued to need treatment. He was unable to sign out against medical advice due to a language barrier that prevented us from understanding if he actually comprehended what his medical condition was. This patient wanted to leave AMA because his wife was being treated in another facility and he wanted to go be with her. Alice took amazing strides to ensure his concerns were accurately translated to the point we were able to solve the dilemma and the patient left to be with his wife. I am utterly grateful for Alice's help during that difficult situation; and for the comfort knowing such an amazing caregiver, medical professional, and caring human being is taking care of patients.
