Alicia Cooper, RN, BSN, PHN
I am honored to recognize Alicia for her extraordinary courage, compassion, and unwavering commitment to patient safety.
While working at the nurse's station, Alicia heard yelling from down the hall; although the emergency was not involving one of her assigned patients, she immediately responded without hesitation. When she entered the room, she found a respiratory therapist attempting to protect the patient from water pouring through the ceiling by pushing the patient's bed against the wall.
Within seconds, the situation rapidly worsened, and Alicia recognized that the ceiling was beginning to collapse and that the patient was in immediate danger. Acting purely on instinct and dedication to our patient's safety, she rushed to the bedside, grabbed the patient's bed, and began moving the patient out of the room as quickly as possible.
As Alicia cleared the room with the patient, the ceiling gave way and steaming hot water came crashing down with tremendous force. During the rescue, Alicia was splashed on her back with scalding water while attempting to protect the patient from harm.
Her actions that day were truly heroic! Without her rapid assessment, selfless response, and courage under pressure, the patient could have suffered devastating injuries from both the collapsing ceiling and scalding water. Instead of thinking of herself, Alicia instinctively put the safety and well-being of the patient first.
Alicia exemplifies everything that the DAISY Award represents: extraordinary clinical skill, compassion, teamwork, courage, and dedication to nursing excellence. She went far beyond the expected duties of a nurse and made a life-changing difference in a moment of crisis.
I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this recognition.
