It has been three months since I was in ICU and not a day goes by that I regret not sharing my experience. I was absolutely terrified and in incredible pain the first several days. My time at Sanford Hospital is one I will never forget. I am profoundly grateful for the care I received. While in ICU I was stunned by the incredible people and system. This is something truly special. Alicia was the night nurse for me for 2-3 nights. She was an absolute rock for me in multiple ways. I trusted her. I do not know how to properly describe how this nurse - this compassionate human being impacted me. I feel it must be respected and recognized. One can tell when a person cares about the answer when they ask a question. One can tell when a human being desires to be somewhere else when they are caring for you. Alicia was compassionate when it was needed and task-focused when the situation called for it. She treated me like I was going to be ok. She encouraged me. She listened to me with compassion. She seemed to go the extra two miles that others did not. She told me the facts. I trusted her. One night my daughter called and spoke with her. My daughter was distraught and concerned about my care. Alicia calmed her down. She took the time. She was compassionate. I cannot begin to share what that meant to me. I am a consultant by profession. I know not this world of nursing / medical care. I know talent and passion when I see it. Alicia is a shining example of incredible compassion and professionalism. The world needs more people like Alicia.
