The impact on the patient outcome and the value of care they provided to this patient is impactful and is deserving to be recognized.
A GI Provider received a call from a friend after hours about a family that has a very complex medical condition. The family stated that the patient had a low hemoglobin that had been treated with transfusions of blood, but he remained pale and sob. The family was concerned that the patient's PCD when trying to schedule this patient for a GI Scope due to his complex history, was unable to get the patient in for a lengthy time to wait. The doctor contacted his primary nurse on her day off to let her know that this patient would need to be added ASAP to his schedule. The primary nurse worked with BEC the next day to facilitate the urgent scope and was able to have the patient scheduled for the procedure the next day. By that afternoon following the scope, the doctor had the pathology reports that it was melanoma. The office nurse working that day spent over 4 hours calling to get the patient scheduled for an urgent CT scan. She worked with the patient and the family to make sure that they were able to travel to the appointment since the first available for the patient was at St. Vincent Ascension Health at 7:30 pm and the results of the CT showed a small bowel obstruction. The patient was admitted immediately and sent to the OR for the removal of the tumor that was causing the obstruction.

The hard work and collaboration that the 2 nurses put into making sure this patient had the exact care that he needed without having a delay in care shows the values of PURPOSE, COMPASSION EXCELLENCE, AND TEAMWORK. The gratitude from the patient, the patient's family, and the doctor are forever thankful for not putting the patient off or allowing a delay in care. When speaking with the nurses involved in this event, they reported that they "were just doing their job." There are times in healthcare where just doing the job needs recognition. The impact on the patient outcome and the value of care they provided to this patient is impactful and is deserving to be recognized. Thank you for leading by example, as sometimes we know that things are often handed off to the next person, this can be an example to everyone that we have a PURPOSE-which is to work to do good in the lives of others.
