My 17-year-old great-nephew was pronounced brain dead here in our CCU. His parents so generously agreed to donate his organs and he became a One Legacy patient. Alisha was his nurse from the first day. As a lifelong NICU nurse, I had no idea that the care for a patient being prepared for organ donation was so intense and their acuity changes to a 1:1 status. Alisha carried out her work in such an efficient manner you would never have known that.
At the same time, Alisha was so sweet and compassionate and was able to interact and somehow nurture the many people who came in to support our family. There were a lot of visitors, sometimes filling the room. As a nurse I know how hard it is to work around a lot of people, especially when you are trying to concentrate on your critical patient. Yet Alisha never gave the impression that anyone was in her way or was causing her an inconvenience. She even agreed to work an extra shift to take care of my nephew. She was such a blessing to us. Watching her work was an inspiration to me as a nurse. Our family will always remember Alisha and all the great staff that helped us though his last days. We want everyone to know how grateful we were having Alisha as our nurse those 3 day in the CCU.
