A deaf man was here for a couple of weeks with a leg fracture which required multiple surgeries. The hospital's translating machine was not working for interpreter services. The man's wife was also deaf, so she was unable to translate or communicate with hospital staff. Alisha had previously learned sign language and was able to accompany him to pre-op and translate for other RNs, physicians, and therapists. Alisha was key in the medical care of this patient as well as patient safety and satisfaction for the family. She went out of her way to make sure this patient was educated on his procedures and care while still caring for the rest of her patient load.
