Like many women, the idea of giving birth and the labor process terrified me. After a routine doctor's visit at 38 weeks pregnant turned into a surprise induction, my emotions were fried. Had I known the angel of a nurse who was waiting for us the next day I would have been relieved from the get-go. Alison was with us from early Saturday morning until that evening when I delivered my healthy daughter in a stress-free and welcoming environment. All day while I labored I felt like Alison’s only patient when in reality I knew labor and delivery was actually very busy at the moment. Alison made my husband and I feel like old friends instead of patients. She went above and beyond to show my husband support maneuvers to help ease my pain, joked with me to keep everything light, and paid the absolute highest level of respect to my wishes for a natural birth. When I did eventually decide to get an epidural she not only medically supported me in that decision but she made sure I was emotionally prepared, knowing I’d come in wanting a natural birth. I honestly was sad when our time with Alison came to an end and I have found myself thinking of her since then and hope she knows what a fond place she holds in my heart, and always will. I know that words on paper will only ever convey a portion of the warmth and kindness I felt in my labor and delivery room because of Alison.
