My husband was recently a patient in the ICU. He had suffered a stroke. He had endured 2 separate surgeries in a very short time. He remained intubated and sedated to let his brain rest. Despite a very grave finding Alissa identified during shift change, her compassion and understanding of the change in status of my husband was explained to me very clearly and compassionately by her. In addition, she was able to guide me through the process with the surgeons who came to speak with me as well. Despite the fact she never knew my husband, she cared for him as she did. I feel like she was able to know him through me and my children, who were at the bedside. She did not just treat my husband, she treated all of us. Despite the horrible outcome of the loss of my husband, while he remained on life support to coordinate the organ donation, Alissa continued to care for my husband attentively and with high respect. In addition, she was compassionate not only to him, but to our whole family at the most difficult time. There are many things that are a blur during our 3 days, but the care he received from her reassured me he was not suffering or in pain physically. For her to be in the highly emotional environment of a family unexpectedly losing a very important person, she always remained compassionate and professional to every one of us. Alissa is a role model for compassion and exemplary practice. Alissa should be considered a role model to other staff members as having behaviors that are perceived as extraordinary. She created an environment where attributes of trust, compassion, mutual respect, and ethical behaviors were modeled and supported. Alissa was always accessible to our family and responsive to our needs or questions. She made sure we felt informed of everything that was going on and always showed respect for my husband.
