Alissa Hladilek, nurse manager at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire, was recognized for her leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Hladilek was named nurse manager of Infection Prevention and Control and Infectious Diseases departments in March after serving in the interim role since January. "I couldn't have fathomed my new role would begin during a pandemic, but it has been the greatest learning experience of my life," Hladilek says.
She says the biggest challenge during the COVID-19 pandemic was learning how to navigate and effectively communicate the rapid changes that were occurring. "Decisions were always made with our staff's best interest and safety in mind," she says. "However, I stay up at night questioning if I had done enough to educate and protect staff so they could better care for themselves and their patients."
Hladilek says she learned many lessons throughout the pandemic. "Working at Mayo Clinic Health System, we are blessed to be surrounded by extraordinary individuals from all facets of health care who each bring a unique skill set to the team," she says. "I learned that you can reach out to others for help as much as they reach out to you."
She also learned how to find time to take care of herself. "Chocolate helped," she says. "Also, I had to unplug for at least a short amount of time each day. My daughter always provides me with a great laugh and smile, which eases a lot of tension. In addition, being able to share an occasional laugh with the team has helped immensely. I'm also an avid runner, so taking a good long run would calm my busy mind."
Her advice to others is to not be afraid of new challenges. "We are surrounded by some of the most knowledgeable and kind leaders who will help you grow and guide you to success. Mayo Clinic Health System offers so many opportunities. You just have to be willing to embrace them," she says.
