Aliyah was so compassionate; she truly cared about us and took her time to help, explain, and walk us through everything. If she hadn’t walked into our room, my sister would have given up and felt like she had failed.
My sister was a patient on the postpartum unit at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and delivered her first baby there. We were having a difficult time trying to breastfeed and getting the baby to latch. He just kept crying and no matter what we did, nothing worked. We were on the verge of breakdown. My sister felt like a failure. The goal was for my sister to breastfeed so that the baby could receive the “liquid gold” everyone talks about. She truly did not want to formula feed, but the baby kept crying and wouldn’t latch. Our night nurse, Aliyah, walked in to introduce herself. My sister looked at her with desperation for help. She saw how overwhelmed my sister was. Aliyah started to explain everything to us, all the steps of what to do to implement the feeding. She helped my sister comfortably position the baby, showed us how to get his mouth open and just like that, a successful latch! The frown and sadness on my sister’s face turned into a smile of relief. Aliyah sat down with us and explained everything to us; she reassured my sister. For every feeding that night, Aliyah came in to assist us. We felt at ease and that we were in good hands all night. Giving birth is like a whirlwind, so many things going on at once, and now, we’re responsible for a newborn. Aliyah was so compassionate; she truly cared about us and took her time to help, explain, and walk us through everything. If she hadn’t walked into our room, my sister would have given up and felt like she had failed. She is currently successfully breastfeeding, and the baby is growing perfectly. We did not get to thank Aliyah enough and show how much we truly appreciated all that she did for us. She listened to us patiently and was there in our time of need. Thank you for going above and beyond and for making the most emotional time such a great experience. Nurses like you truly make a difference.
