Allan provided exceptional care for a mutual patient of ours in the ICU who suffered from developmental delay and suspected mania. The patient's condition was so profound that he would shout profanities, lie on the floor naked, lick the floor, and attempt to eat his own excrement. On numerous occasions, I directly observed Allan's exceptional compassion, kindness, and even bravery in providing care for our patient. On many other shifts, this patient required powerful antipsychotics and even restraints because he could be intimidating to the point of aggression. Allan worked closely with him deftly redirecting his behavior, keeping the patient and the staff safe, and even building a degree of rapport with a patient who initially seemed unreachable. Allan went above and beyond the call of duty in caring for this complex patient and he truly exemplifies the platonic form of a compassionate nurse in his care for our mutual patient.
