Chest compressions began, and even though there was an entire team in the room and she was trying to focus on our procedure, she jumped right in and took her turn multiple times. Even while giving chest compressions, her attention did not leave me completely.
I can't go to bed without taking a moment and highlighting an amazing staff member. We are all OR nurses. Some of us are stronger than others, and some of us just shine so bright that we can't help but notice and recognize them in all they do. Tonight, and more often than that, that nurse for me is Allison Dorfman. Tonight, at some point after 5 pm, right before I was about to head to the Main OR as they needed coverage, I was made aware of a bedside ECMO that was going to go. At that moment, it seemed as if it was going eventually, not emergently. I decided to start gathering equipment and supplies before heading up. Then the phone rang. It was the MD we needed to mobilize immediately. I called Allison she appeared in seconds of my SOS. if I was going to go upstairs to do bedside ECMO, I knew I wanted her to be the nurse by my side. From the moment I called, she did everything without hesitation. Her confidence and competence is unmatched. The moment we arrived in the PICU, she sprang into action, opening while I set up as quickly as possible. Plugging in our equipment without missing a beat of what was being communicated in the room. Chest compressions began, and even though there was an entire team in the room and she was trying to focus on our procedure, she jumped right in and took her turn multiple times. Even while giving chest compressions, her attention did not leave me completely. She heard our need, communicated she needed to switch, a new staff member took over compressions, and in a a blink of an eye, I had what I needed. Unfortunately, we did not achieve the desired outcome for this patient. Allison and I cleaned up and returned back down to our unit. Allison showed so much support and compassion. I am forever grateful.
