On Valentine's Day, Allison was caring for a 93-year-old patient. When he realized it was Valentine's Day, he asked her if it would be possible to send flowers to his wife. She is 94 and living in a nursing home and he said he had never missed a Valentine's Day! Allison took it upon herself to make this happen. She told me that even if she had to pay for it herself, she was going to send the flowers to his wife. Allison called the nursing home to find his wife and make sure she could receive flowers. Then she called the florist to set up a delivery. I offered to pay for the flowers, but she insisted she would pay for them. Allison came to my office later in the day and said that the florist was already booked and couldn't deliver that day. I told her to call them back and reserve an arrangement and that I would pick it up and take it to the nursing home since the florist would be closed by the time she finished her shift. When Allison called the florist back and they realized what she was trying to do, they told her not to worry, that they would arrange the delivery! She went above and beyond for her patient that day to help him honor a tradition on Valentine's Day. She did all the work herself, all while caring for her 5 patients. Allison's selfless act is a true example of the heart of nurse who will do ANYTHING to help her patients.
