She is dedicated to finding experiences that will increase her knowledge and help her be a better student and nurse.
Allison displays many of the same attributes as Florence Nightingale:  confidence, determination, dedication, integrity, and compassion.

Confidence:  Allison is an exceptional student who truly strives to learn and understand the concepts being taught.  Not only does she excel academically with a 3.83 GPA, but she gives of her time helping others learn. She has been a Peer Assisted Learning Student for Mental Health, OB, and currently Pediatrics.  She is engaging and makes learning fun.

Determination:  Allison has always wanted to be a pediatric nurse, and although her pediatric clinical assignment was not in a hospital, it did not deter her. Her love for pediatrics and thirst for knowledge enabled her to contact and shadow a pediatric nurse and see first-hand what working in a busy pediatric unit was all about. She fell in love with pediatrics and nursing even more.

Dedication:  Allison’s desire to learn overflows into her life outside of school.  She works part-time in a Telemetry unit, learning from other nurses and patients.  On the weekends, Allison teaches and works with children at her church.  She is dedicated to finding experiences that will increase her knowledge and help her be a better student and nurse.

Integrity:  Allison is hard working, yet humble.  I have watched as she will let others answer a question in a tutoring session, even though I know she knows the answer.  She doesn’t need to have the “limelight” and wants to help her classmates excel and learn.  Allison is honest, hardworking, and an advocate for others.

Compassion:  Allison has a tender heart and cares deeply.  This deep caring made her question if she would be able to handle working with sick and potentially dying children.  I told her this is exactly what would make her not just a good nurse - but a great nurse.  Compassion and empathy are the cornerstones of nursing.  It is okay to grieve and feel loss, to comfort a family, to hold a patient’s hand, to be with a family on the best and worst days of their lives – to make a difference.

I feel Allison is deserving of the DAISY Award as she exemplifies all of these attributes and so much more – she will be a light and a difference for all the patients she will come to care for.
