I knew in that moment that Allison would make sure she did everything she could to make sure my mom was okay, and she did.
My mom was a patient at PIH for about 2 weeks. She had a very rare GI issue that the doctor was able to repair. With this rare stomach issue, my mom’s stomach was in her chest pushing against her heart, after the surgery this was no longer the case and my mom’s heart had issues regulating without the pressure it was accustomed to. My mom had Allison as her nurse a few days prior to her surgery, and the level of care and compassion Allison showed my mom was top-notch. She made my mom and me feel much more at ease with the care she was receiving. A few days later, post-surgery, it was mealtime, and my mom had just been seated in the chair by an aid in her room to eat. The aid made sure she was situated and left the room. It was just me in the room with my mom. My mom started to become disoriented, sweaty, and extremely hot to touch. As I was looking for the call button to notify the desk about what was happening, my mom’s body stiffened up, got tense and her eyes rolled up into her head and she lost consciousness. I saw the call button, but the food tray was in the way. I knew that I had to do something as quickly as possible, so I popped my head out into the hallway and shouted for help, and that my mom was having some type of episode and needed immediate help. After making sure I had been heard, I quickly ran back into the room to make sure my mom was okay. She was still unresponsive, and her body was still tense. Not knowing what was happening, the worst was running through my head, and each second felt like the longest second in the world, as we waited only a few seconds before help arrived. Allison, who was not my mom’s nurse that day, immediately came RUNNING into my mom’s room and got to work. I can’t explain the huge sense of relief that rushed through me the moment I saw Allison was there. I knew in that moment that Allison would make sure she did everything she could to make sure my mom was okay, and she did. Allison truly is an Angel, and I will forever be grateful for her in the moments my mom needed her most. Because of Allison, my mom was okay, and I wish I had the opportunity to thank her for the care, comfort, and reassurance she gave us. This was written with my mom's consent, and we are both extremely grateful for her help and the sense of urgency Allison showed when my mom needed her.
