In one particular example, Allison took care of a complicated patient over the course of several weeks. This patient would not allow staff to do their daily tasks and had difficulty coping in the hospital setting. Allison started to build a trusting and caring relationship that resulted in the patient becoming more cooperate with all staff. Allison would spend time in the patient room, building trust and speaking to him in his preferred language. Efforts from Allison resulted in the patient not requiring medical restraints to protect necessary invasive lines.
Due to family stressors, this patient would often be alone and need reassurance from staff. Allison went above and beyond to provide care, attention, and emotional support that this patient desperately needed in the hospital setting. For example, this patient required daily bathing that needed to be performed cautiously to avoid inadvertent removal of invasive lines by the patient. Allison would take the time to bath the patient carefully to keep the patient calm and reassured while the family was unable to be at the bedside. This task would sometimes take up to an hour each day and Allison would perform this duty diligently and without hesitation.
Allison is often recognized by peers for her calm, nurturing, and peaceful presence that is often necessary on a busy and high turnover unit. She is often assisting peers with other complex patients on the unit and is recognized for being a team player.
