My mom was on the unit after a TAVR and a hematoma excision, two trips to surgery in one day. My mom has two really bad hips that need replacement, and she lives with chronic pain. She had been lying down for close to 24 hours straight and needed to empty her bladder. Note: This is a story about the amazing care nurses give in really crazy situations.

Ally assured my mom that the Pure Wick was in place and she could just let go, and the Pure Wick would take over. My mom just could not relax enough to let her bladder empty. Ally attempted to help my mom to the bathroom, but when my mom stood up, her bladder started to empty. Ally stood there holding the Pure Wick in place, so my mom could relieve herself and didn’t feel like she was peeing on the floor.

Ally reassured my mom the whole time, like this was just how it was, and I’m sure this was not typical. When a nurse can make a patient comfortable and help them retain their dignity in a precarious situation, that’s compassionate care. That’s how Ally treated my mom. My mom and our family were lucky to have her as my mom’s nurse.

It's nurses like Ally that deserve to be recognized.
