Without Allyson’s intervention, the patient would have attempted to drive home and would likely have not had the emergent medical care that they needed.
Allyson was in the garage of a BSW building. She noticed a worried individual standing outside a car and approached to investigate. Inside the car, an employee was struggling to breathe but refused to go to the Emergency Department. Allyson, identifying herself as a Nurse Practitioner (NP), informed the employee and their co-worker that the employee's condition was serious, and they couldn't drive home. Allyson and the co-worker then called Baylor Police for assistance, and an ambulance was summoned.
Once Baylor PD arrived, the patient agreed to go to the ED and care was transferred to EMS, where the patient went into cardiac arrest. Without Allyson’s intervention, the patient would have attempted to drive home and would likely have not had the emergent medical care that they needed.
Leadership of that employee’s department contacted me (employee/nominator) and explained that the co-worker of the patient described Allyson as “calming” and “took charge” of the situation to ensure the patient received the proper treatment.
