Memorial Day weekend is always a busy weekend and if you work in an emergent care clinical setting on a holiday weekend, you take on a certain amount of stress. This is exactly why I tried to avoid the Emergency Room on Memorial Day weekend at all costs. However, after contact with our pediatrician, it was quickly realized that we had no other choice. I had to bring my child to the Emergency Room at PCRMC on a Saturday night over Memorial Day weekend. Just as I suspected, we were greeted by a full waiting room and a long wait. The looks on the faces of staff told an unspoken story of the stresses they had been working under that evening…and then there was Alma. After waiting for some time for a minor procedure my child would have to have, Alma entered the room like a breath of fresh air. She held my child's hand pre, during, and post procedure. She talked to her calmly throughout the entire event, as if she had all the time in the world, and we were her only patient. She spoke with me and treated me as if I was the expert in my child's care. This is what nursing is all about, providing the care your patient needs while comforting and providing education with respect and regard for the patient's wishes and goals. Thank you Alma for providing patience and world class care to my child and our family! You are the definition of what makes PCRMC great!
