A patient of ours has custody of her grandson. During one of her visits, the patient had to bring her grandson. During this time Alondra had the opportunity to chat with the grandson. During this discussion, she discovered that the grandson didn't have a 7th birthday party due to his grandmother's illness.
Alondra took it upon herself to organize a "7-1/2" birthday party for this young man. What was planned as a basic party with cake and ice cream, turned into a full-blown birthday bash! Once other staff found out, gifts, balloons, and even Spiderman were at the party! The local news was also notified and Channel 5 did a segment on the party.
We feel that Alondra is the epitome of a nurse. Not only does she provide and recognize the care needs of the patient, she provides for the caregivers of the patients. This little boy was providing care for his grandmother—that's why there was no party.
Alondra made it possible for this child to be a "kid" and to escape the everyday reality of his grandmother's illness.
