We had a patient on the unit with a recent diagnosis of stage 4 lung cancer who was given weeks to live. In the two weeks before he passed away, all of the staff was wonderful in welcoming his many visitors and caring for his increasing physical needs. On the day that he passed away, he expressed to his nurse Alta that he wanted to see one last sunset before he died. Alta coordinated all the team members and supplies (he was on 15L hi-flow and could not ambulate) and moved him and his family down to the day room and the end of the hall where there is a wall of windows so that the patient could see his one last sunset. It was a beautiful and moving experience for which his family is so grateful. He passed away later that evening. Alta showed immense compassion and care and made the patient's last moments on earth special for him and his family. Alta is truly an inspirational nurse and human being.
