Alvina Deleon, Registered
During one of the scariest moments of our lives, Alvina was more than just a nurse; she was a daughter and a guardian for my 4-year-old, who was in the PICU struggling with severe asthma and pneumonia.
It was heartbreaking to watch her go through the heavy coughing and difficulty breathing, all while being hooked up to so many lines and undergoing constant nebulizer treatments for such a little girl. The hospital environment was overwhelming and hard to process, and she followed infection control guidelines to the maximum, and she always made sure we were never in the dark.
She explained every single step to us, giving us clear instructions and the constant reassurance we desperately needed to stay strong for our girl. She didn't just "manage" the clinical tasks; She truly cared for her soul.
I will never forget the sight of her holding my daughter, hugging her, and gently touching and tapping her back to help her calm down and catch her breath when she was panicking. it was the pure human comfort that a child needs most.
She even took the time to carefully arrange my daughter's toys right in front of her, doing everything she could to bring a little bit of cheer into a high-pressure-ICU room. Even while being so compassionate, her professional standards were flawless. She followed every safety protocol. She treated my daughter as if she were her own.
In a place like the PICU, that human touch made all the difference. She is the epitome of what an extraordinary nurse should be.
