Circumstances have an enormous impact on our personality and can also promote social interaction or cause self-isolation. My circumstances were less than ideal, which has led to the building of walls to keep others out. This self-imposed isolation makes it nearly impossible for others to get to know me. I mention this only so you can understand the significance of the impact Alyssa had on me.
When I came to the hospital I had no idea of the severity of my illness. I was very reluctant to stay, but knew that it was necessary. I did not know it then, but not only would I heal physically during this hospitalization, I would also receive emotional healing that I did not know was possible.
I will forever remember Alyssa as a beautiful energetic woman that broke through the walls I had built up over the years. She took care of me with gentle kindness and great wit. She never seemed too busy to listen. She connected with me on a level I had not experienced in some time. She never dismissed me, I was important to her and it showed in her words and actions. It is because of her caring interactions with me that I began to feel hope again.
It is remarkable to have experienced such a compassionate person in a world where self-interest over shadows selflessness. With Alyssa's help, I have gained more hope and I can see a positive outlook in my near future. I will forever be grateful to this exceptional nurse.
