When Alyssa is working, she is the backbone of our facility. She comes in as extra hands and takes care of all our patients as if they were her own assignment.

Recently, we had a delivery that resulted in a newborn needing some extra resuscitation. When this happens, it takes two nurses to facilitate, and there were only two nurses on our floor at the time, so we were both busy in the nursery caring for the newborn.

Alyssa was called to help and came willingly to do whatever she could for our floor. She admitted a pediatric surgical patient, doing everything she could to make the family feel comfortable. She then went to the mother's room of the infant we were caring for. She helped that mom get up and into a wheelchair, making sure she could get to the nursery to see her baby as soon as possible.

She came to the nursery and asked what she needed to do to make sure that patient could be up as soon as possible after delivery and then proceeded to care for her in the same way we would have if we'd been able to.

Once the mom was brought to the nursery, she went back and helped to clean the patient's room up, remaking the bed with clean linens, and clearing out any equipment that wasn't needed so that the patient would come back to a room that was put together and as calm as possible.

We know that in an emergency, we can rely on her to treat our patients the way we would want to. Alyssa never seems to expect recognition for what she does. But that in itself shows what a great nurse she is.

We couldn't focus on what we need to do without her backing us up and taking care of the rest of the patients. She is an asset to the nursing profession.
