The Daisy Award recipient is bestowed upon a Registered Nurse who personifies LIJ's remarkable patient experience through clinical expertise, compassionate care and the ability to be a role model amongst their peers. Alyssa Langer is a Registered Nurse who not only exemplifies all of the criteria for the Award, but continually advocates for her patients, sometimes with self sacrifice in order to make them comfortable and well cared for. Alyssa started her nursing career one year ago at LIJ after graduating from Nursing School with a passion for helping sick people and ensuring they heal in a comfortable environment. Alyssa attends education seminars and regularly seeks answers to questions regarding her patients so that she can maintain her clinical competency and expertise. On our unit, patients often come back to visit after they are discharged and many of them specifically ask to see Alyssa because they remember her big smile, kind heart and can-do attitude. During manager rounding, I have received numerous compliments about Alyssa from patients who know her by first name, saying she is a "gem," "extraordinary" and "what all nurses should be like," just to name a few. Alyssa portrays extraordinary compassionate care every day she is in the hospital! I believe the best way in which to describe Alyssa and why she is deserving of this recognition is not through one specific story or situation, but rather to explain how she is viewed by her peers and patients. Alyssa's patients are always very comfortable, informed, educated and well cared for. Alyssa's peers view her as an "amazing nurse," "always helping everyone," and "one of the most kind-hearted individuals I have ever met." These are unsolicited remarks that I have been told about Alyssa, which demonstrate her commitment to her patients, her peers and the entire nursing community!
