There was a gentleman in the ER waiting room. I asked if he was checking in and he said no. He explained that his wife passed away 2 yrs ago at the very same time. He just wanted to be near the last place that she was at. I called the ED Charge Nurse to let him know that the gentleman was not checking in. I explained to the Charge Nurse what the situation was. Not but 5 mins later Alyssa pulled up a chair next to the gentleman and started talking with him. It was amazing to see what a compassionate nurse Alyssa is. I am proud of our staff. As I am writing this, I am tearing up. Before the gentleman left, he told me how great KCH has been to him and his wife. He will forever be grateful for nurses like Alyssa who took the time to comfort someone who is still grieving for his wife. I am proud to say I work in the ER. Thank you Alyssa for being such an empathetic and compassionate person. Witnessing that made my cup run over.
