This was organized and orchestrated by Alyssa who cared for more than my husband’s physical needs but also spoke to our souls.
My husband has been in the hospital with severe Covid pneumonia since January, in ICU on a ventilator and his life hung in the balance for weeks. Because he and I work together, we’re rarely apart. So having him sedated, on a ventilator, and under visiting restrictions during this time was not only terrifying but also a time of intense loneliness. He is my partner & soulmate and we were separated and missed many things we loved to do together, including Valentine’s Day. However, this past Sunday, our very talented and intuitive nurse, Alyssa gave us an opportunity to share what we missed.

My husband is not an easy transfer right now but she organized helpers to put him in a chair so we could wheel him to the sun room for what she called a “change of scenery”. When we got there, to our surprise, music was playing and a table was decorated with a white tablecloth, tinsel, and a heart-themed centerpiece. We were able to sit together and have a little “date”. I hadn’t sat with my husband in two months but there we were, sitting face-to-face in a beautiful setting. I can’t even express how meaningful it was! This was organized and orchestrated by Alyssa who cared for more than my husband’s physical needs but also spoke to our souls.

Alyssa is a nurse with excellent assessment skills and critical thinking. She is a fierce advocate for her patients and their families. She also possesses a skill that is not common and that is her very intuitive compassion that she displays in practical acts of tenderness. We will never forget our 2022 Valentine’s Day date – or Nurse Alyssa!

Note: This is Alyssa's 2nd DAISY Award!
