Alyssa became a significant part of T’s family and often became their source of motivation, whether it be during T’s ambulation around the unit or just simply participating in his treatment regimen.
In general, nurses are ordinary people with an extraordinary capacity to care for others. Regardless of their level of expertise and wherever they fall in Benner's Novice-to-Expert concept, they all can uplift the lives of those whom they are interacting with. Alyssa can be considered young in the nursing profession. She started working at KP Irvine through our new-grad program and since then has been a significant part of it, helping other young nurses acclimate to the nursing workflow and embrace this noble profession.
Undoubtedly, this nurse is a driver for change and a valuable contributor to our success at KP Irvine. While her participation in various committees and initiatives is remarkable, her contributions at the bedside in delivering high-quality compassionate care to our patients are noteworthy and deserving of this Award.
In recent months, patient T who was diagnosed with advanced-stage cancer was admitted to 5A. Due to multiple complications and prolonged hospital stay, T and his family’s anxiety was building up. While they remain appreciative of the care they received from the team, it is noticeable that they are becoming more demanding and requiring more attention as time went by. To provide consistency in the quality of care, the family and the care team decided to assign a group of nurses to rotate in caring for T and Alyssa is one of these amazing nurses.
Shift after shift, T’s condition became more complicated and challenging, but this did not stop Alyssa from connecting with T and his wife, his children, and other extended family members. It was not that long before Alyssa became a significant part of T’s family and often became their source of motivation, whether it be during T’s ambulation around the unit or just simply participating in his treatment regimen. This healthy relationship grew until one day, T’s condition deteriorated leading to his transfer to critical care, and later went on to comfort care.
On that day, Alyssa along with some of her colleagues went to ICU to continue to provide support and comfort to T and his family. An ICU Nurse witnessed the event and wrote: “The family of T, expressed deep appreciation and satisfaction of the excellent care provided by the 5th-floor staff. They continued to provide sincere emotional support to the family by coming down to the ICU to provide comfort to the family and say a prayer at the bedside when he was transitioned to comfort care. It was heartwarming to see how much the family trusted them.” This is just one of the examples demonstrating the extraordinary care Alyssa provides her patients.

Staying 5 days in room X allowed me to meet many nurses. Alyssa displayed compassion and care at all times and often checked with me throughout my stay. We discussed books and she saw I was just starting to read The Stationery Shop. A book she recently purchased but had yet to start. At no time was she bothered or annoyed with my condition or requests and she sought out expert help with my IV. Someone used a special machine to find the right vein. Alyssa displayed professionalism, courtesy, knowledge, and extreme compassion for my plight. An EXCEPTIONAL nurse, and a treasure to her profession! Thank you, Alyssa, for all you did for me.

I was feeling both hopeless and mad at myself for getting so sick. Alyssa took the time to listen to me during such a difficult time. Much appreciated! Alyssa is smart and empathetic. She wants to help patients and help others do their job more efficiently. I cannot say enough to praise her. All Kaiser nurses are good, Alyssa is EXTRAORDINARY.

While time and experience can enhance the qualities of a nurse, it is demonstrated in these examples the importance of compassion and human connection in the delivery of high-quality care. Whether one is a novice or an expert, we can all learn from Alyssa the true essence of being a nurse and our role in providing care far more than just ordinary. Alyssa is a true DAISY Nurse.
